As the stigma surrounding CBD fades and information becomes more readily available, more people are empowering themselves with this natural choice for addressing anxiety, stress, joint discomfort, digestive issues and a whole lot more.

Many of you have been providing your pets suffering from many of the same maladies with our Treatibles pet line of Organic Full Spectrum Hemp CBD Oil products. Now that we have introduced Auntie Dolores’ new hemp-derived CBD oils and capsules for people, you may be curious about the dosage recommendations and why they differ so much from the Treatibles recommendations for your dog, cat or horse.

For example, we recommend a starting dose of 1 mg of CBD per every 10 pounds of a pet’s weight. So, a 120 pound dog would start with 12 mg. For people, we recommend a starting dose of 25 – 50 mg. That means a person weighing in at 120 pounds would be taking between two and four times the amount of CBD than a dog for the same desired results. What gives?

We promise it will make sense once you are armed with knowledge about CBD receptors in the body and how the endocannabinoid system works. Here we go!

THE SCIENCE

Cannabinoids are a group of naturally occurring chemical compounds present in both animals and the plant genus cannabis, which includes both hemp and cannabis. Cannabidiol (CBD) is recognized as the most therapeutically beneficial cannabinoid.

Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids derived from within our bodies. All animals with a skeletal system have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). This biochemical communication system regulates the peripheral and central nervous system (including the brain), immunological system, organs, and vital physiological functions. It ensures that the major systems of the body work synergistically. When there is a deficiency of endocannabinoid production, the ECS’s cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 utilize the addition of phytocannabinoids (plant based cannabinoids, including those found in hemp) to help create calm, balance and ease and provide support for relaxing, repairing or restoring.

The number of cannabinoid receptors varies from species to species.

Dogs are especially responsive to CBD as they have the highest concentration of cannabinoid receptors in their brains and bodies (even in their salivary glands and hair follicles!). Cats generally aren’t as sensitive as dogs, so more CBD per every 10 pounds of body weight is often recommended. Scientists have recently discovered that horses also possess sensitive cannabinoid receptors. Some veterinarians are recommending a 25 mg starting dose of CBD for these magnificent creatures whose weight averages between 1,000 and 2,000 pounds.

MIND BLOWING FACT

CBD does not bind with cannabinoid receptorsWhat it does, however, is help the availability of the cannabinoids created within our ECS. It also interacts with other receptors in our body, including binding with serotonin and dopamine.

One of the advantages of full spectrum hemp CBD oil is that it contains trace amounts of THC (less than .3%, a percentage too low to cause psychoactive effects) along with other supporting cannabinoids. These do bind with our cannabinoid receptors. So, Auntie Dolores and Treatibles products are efficiently utilized by the endocannabinoid system.

THE ENTOURAGE EFFECT

Another advantage to Full Spectrum Hemp CBD Oil is the Entourage Effect. This refers to a boost in the therapeutic benefits of CBD when working in unison with all of the cannabinoids, terpenes, antioxidants and other natural chemicals found in the hemp plant. Together, they produce a greater effect than CBD as an isolated compound.

YOUR IDEAL DOSE IS UNIQUELY YOUR OWN

One of the perks of Auntie Dolores  750 mg and 1500 mg oil dropper bottles is that you can experiment and determine the dose that works best for you

If you have limited experience with CBD, you may want to start with 25 mg two times per day and decide if the desired results are achieved. It is perfectly safe to increase (or decrease) your dosage or frequency. Hemp-derived CBD is safe, non-toxic and non-psychoactive.

Keep in mind that dosage can vary based on many factors including levels of stress or discomfort. For example, on an average day 25 mg may be your perfect dose to manage anxiety. On a day that you have a presentation to give or a doctor’s appointment, you may benefit from an increased dose.

For everyday aches, your regular dose of CBD may be perfect. However, if you suffer an injury and are experiencing a higher level of discomfort, increasing the dose may be more beneficial.
